"Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but on the seventh day is a Sabbath of the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work..."
Exodus 20:8-10
Growing up Sundays were a day with family and as a family we attended church together. My Dad did not always go with us but Mom never failed to find us a ride to Sunday school and church. After church families would gather on the lawn of church and everyone would have "dinner on the ground" together or you invited another family home with you for Sunday dinner. I miss these times as today we don't invite someone over for Sunday dinner but head to a restaurant for our meal.
I remember one year, I think it was 1987, my sweetie and I had traveled across country visiting with family and friends. We were heading back west, had spent the night in Elk City, OK, got up early to get back on the road and had driven as far as a Liberal, a small city in Kansas. We were both getting hungry so we decided to stop for a bite of lunch. There was no food to be had as everything was closed. It was the Sabbath day and not even a gas station was open to get a soft drink and a bag of chips. We both commented that it was really great to see businesses closed so their employees could spent time with family and attend church together.
Today it is a rarity to see businesses closed on any holiday much less on the Sabbath. The almighty dollar and what it can buy rules our lives. Spend time with your family this Sabbath and go to church as a family. I promise you won't be sorry!
Take Time To Be Holy
by William D. Longstaff, 1882
Take time to be holy, speak oft with thy Lord;
Abide in Him always, and feed on His Word.
Make friends of God’s children, help those who are weak,
Forgetting in nothing His blessing to seek.
Take time to be holy, the world rushes on;
Spend much time in secret, with Jesus alone.
By looking to Jesus, like Him thou shalt be;
Thy friends in thy conduct His likeness shall see.
Take time to be holy, let Him be thy Guide;
And run not before Him, whatever betide.
In joy or in sorrow, still follow the Lord,
And, looking to Jesus, still trust in His Word.
Take time to be holy, be calm in thy soul,
Each thought and each motive beneath His control.
Thus led by His Spirit to fountains of love,
Thou soon shalt be fitted for service above.
SABBATH KEEPERS BY STEVE FINNELL
ReplyDeleteDid God expect Christians to keep the Sabbath? No, He did not. The Sabbath was given to Israel and Israel alone. Nine of the Ten Commandments have been repeated in the New testament with the exception being, remember the Sabbath, and keep it holy.
Deuteronomy 5:1-21 Then Moses summoned all Israel and said to them: "Hear, O Israel, the statues and the ordinances which I am speaking today in your hearing, that you may learn them and observe them carefully. 2. The Lord our God made a covenant with us at Horeb. 3 The Lord did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, with all those of us alive here today..... 12 ' Observe the sabbath day to keep it holy, as the Lord your God has commanded you.......
God did not command Christians to remember the Sabbath.
Christians are saved by grace through faith. Not by law keeping. (Ephesians 2:8)
THE OLD COVENANT IS OBSOLETE
Hebrews 8:7-13.....13 'When He said, "A new covenant," He made the first covenant obsolete. But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear.
Ephesians 2:11-16 ..the Gentiles.. 12 remember that you were at that time separate from commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ......15 by abolishingin His flesh the enmity, which is the Law of commandments contained in ordinances, so that in Himself He might make the two into one new man, thus establishing peace.....(Also see: Colossians 2:10-16)
When Jesus shed His blood on the cross, the Laws of Moses became obsolete. The old covenant was nailed to the cross. Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy was a Law of Moses.
Galatians 5:1-4....3 And I testify again to every man who receives circumcision, that he is under obligation to keep the whole Law, 4 You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.
Keeping the Sabbath is keeping a law of Moses. Men cannot
be justified by keeping the Laws of Moses.
ARE THERE TRUE SABBATH KEEPERS TODAY?
Exodus 31:12-18....14 Therefore you are to observe the sabbath, for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death....
THERE ARE NO TRUE SABBATH KEEPERS TODAY.
